Compared to my newer computers - the fastest PCs excluded - my Sun Sparcstation 20 was overly noisy and almost sounding like a roaring jet engine. It was time to take some action in order to still be able to have this baby indoors.
To be able to reach the inner parts of the SS20 I had to remove some four legged software before any dismounting of hardware could come in question. Our cat Elsa likes to lay on top of the huge Sun monitor which is, I suppose, warm and cosy. One of our other cats, Picasso, preferes to lay beside my trusty iMac DV which is equally warm and cosy. Picasso's early approach to the iMac was to try to lay on top of the iMac (where the heat outlet is located), but as the top of the iMac is slanted he constantly fell off when falling asleep. After learning by mistakes he now simply parks himself on the left side of the iMac.
Ageing Sun disks are notoriusly noisy. Some plastic foam under and above the disks reduces rotational noise quite a bit. A used but clean car washing sponge will do. Just cut the sponge in adequate sizes and fit the pieces under and above the disks.
The PSU fans in my SS20 were worn and their rotational speed interfered with each other producing a loud and very annoying hum. I decided to replace the fans with new low speed fans. CAUTION/ACHTUNG: Using slower fans may give the machine a kiss of death as it will run hotter. My dual Ross HyperSparc CPUs have survived heavy workload without failing, but do not change the fans if you're not willing to take full responsibility if the computer should recieve an invitation to go west (fry to death that is).
Dismounting the PSU is easy. Just unscrew the two torque screws on top of the PSU. Then carefully remove the upper lid to expose the PSU internals. The PCB (actually the hole PSU) can be removed from the metal caseing after removing the two screws holding the PCB and caseing together. CAUTION/ACHTUNG: If you are not familiar with electronics and delicate equipment, don't even think of opening the PSU. The capacitors may still contain hazardous voltage.
After removing the old fans the new ones are mounted in the same way. Make sure the direction of air flow is correct. The fans blow air into the Sparcstation by sucking air from outside the computer case.
Done! The PSU is ready to be remounted inside the SS20. Enjoy the silence. |
